Origin of Name: Named after the sprinter, Marlene Mathews.

Marlene Mathews AO was one of the fastest women in the world during the golden era Australian women’s sprinting. She broke world records for 100y, 220y and 400m. She won five medals, two at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, and three more including two gold at the 1958 Commonwealth Games.

The Sydney RiverCats are a class of catamarans purchased from NQEA Australia, in Cairns, between 19992 and 1995. They operate the Parramatta River services, replacing the First Fleet class ferries, allowing services to be extended to Parramatta wharf. All seven were named after famous Australian female athletes.
