Commuters greet familiar faces as they take time to reflect and set the mood before the trials of their working day begin. Tourists watch eagerly for signs of life as Kirribilli House comes into view. But there are no prime minister sightings to report today. May Gibbs fans arrive at Neutral Bay and head in search of inspiration at the Snugglepot and Cuddlepie author’s home. Childhood memories are revisited with awe and smiles. It’s a short stroll to the foreshore Milson Park where in spring, purple explosions of jacaranda and spreading figs delight. There’s time to explore some history and we walk to Don Bank Cottage, the oldest wooden house in North Sydney to compare past and present lives. But we need to eat. And drink. And we’ve been promising a visit to Thelma and Louise’s harbourside cafe, overlooking Hayes Street hidden beach. We relax and wile away time, satisfied just watching the world before joining the commute home.
